Meet artist and baker Alejandra Alarcón
Alejandra Alarcón is an interdisciplinary artist and designer from Mexico, based in Helsinki. She works at the intersection of food and art. Alarcón uses cake as a sculptural medium to create Edible Landscapes—sculptures layered with flavour and meaning. Often inspired by a specific location and context, these sweet—and occasionally savory—treats are meant to be enjoyed communally while discovering new flavours and reflecting on personal and shared experiences of conviviality.
In her Edible Landscapes, Alarcón experiments with seasonal and local flavours, as well as memories from home. For her, ingredients are just as important as the aesthetics she shares with the audience, so she ensures that every element in her cakes is edible. Alarcón’s process is mostly intuitive, making her cakes unique artworks that don’t specifically follow any type of rules.
Alarcón’s self-taught baker grandmother taught her different cake recipes from a young age, and she has been making cakes ever since. However, it wasn’t until a few years ago that she combined her design background with her artistic work to develop an interdisciplinary practice, where she creates experimental edible installations, performance, and ephemeral artworks.
